Filing Past Due Tax Returns

The due date for the 2019 Tax Filing has passed! The last day to file your taxes was October 15, 2020

BUT! That does not mean that there are no solutions available for you:

Even if the due date to file your taxes has passed, you must file all tax returns that are due as soon as possible, regardless of whether or not you can pay in full right now.

Why You Should File Your Past Due Return Now:

There are 4 main reasons why you should file your past-due tax return now, and they have been officially claimed by the IRS:

1. Avoid interest and penalties

If you file your past-due tax return and pay now what you owe in tax payments, you will be able to limit interest charges and late payment penalties. If it is not possible for you to pay the total amount that you owe, a payment plan is possible depending on your situation. Contact me today for a consultation, and find ways to help you solve this issue without further complications.

2. Claim a Refund

If you don't file your return, you risk losing your refund. In many cases, it is possible for U.S. Expats to receive a refund for withholding or estimated taxes, but if you fail to file your taxes, your chances of claiming this return are lost. You must file your return to claim your tax refunds within 3 years of the tax return due date. This same rule applies to a right to claim tax credits such as the Earned Income Credit, which is another tax benefit that is commonly granted to U.S. expats

3. Protect Social Security Benefits

If you are self-employed and do not file your federal income tax return, any self-employment income you earned will not be reported to the Social Security Administration and you will not receive credits toward Social Security retirement or disability benefits.

4. Avoid Issues Obtaining Loans

If you don't file your return, loan approvals may be delayed. Copies of filed tax returns must be submitted to financial institutions, mortgage lenders/brokers, etc., whenever you want to buy or refinance a home, get a loan for a business, or apply for federal aid for higher education, and not having a complete record on your tax returns may delay and affect your possibilities of obtaining a loan.
