Do you have to file taxes from abroad this year in the U.S.?

If you are an American Expat under 65 years old, you need to file a US tax return this year if your worldwide gross income during the year 2020 was more than the amounts shown below:

  • Single..................................... $12,400
  • Married Filing Jointly...........$24,800
  • Married Filing Separately....$5
  • Head of Household...............$18,650
  • Qualified Widower...............$24,800

***If you are Self Employed: You must file a tax return if your net earnings from self-employment total $400 or more. This is even if your gross income from your worldwide sources is below the tax filing threshold for your filing status.

If you're over 65 years old the amounts slightly vary, so please get in contact with me to find out whether you are except from filing U.S. taxes this year.

Most American Expats who are married with spouses of foreign nationalities, decide to file as Married Filing Separately. Please be aware that if this is your filing status, you’re required to file US taxes if your gross worldwide income is $5 or more. This means that if this is your status, it is almost inevitable that you will have to file US taxes if you worked any paying job during the year 2020.

But you have nothing to worry about, regardless of your status, income, or circumstances I’m here to help you get a hold of your Expat Taxes and make your taxes work for you!

Simply get in contact with me and let’s have a consultation to discuss your taxes, and make a personalized tax plan that will solve all your worries and get you on track to continue enjoying your Expat Life.
